The Qingjiao Ciji Palace in Xiamen is a popular visitor attraction in the area. Situated on a picturesque mountainous location the palace boasts scenic beauty and a tranquil ambience. This historical highlight is beautifully preserved and is protected by the state as a recognized cultural site. Also known as the East Palace this popular attraction inherits a rich cultural legacy. According to tradition this edifice was originally constructed during the reign of the Sung Dynasty in the year 1151. It was built to honour an eminent physician, Wu Ben, who was acclaimed as a medical saint. It is said that the descendants of his disciples can still be found in the provinces of the region.
The well-known palace exudes a sombre and majestic ambience with its magnificent halls and upturned eaves. This renowned edifice is also noteworthy for the four priceless treasures it contains. These include a colourful painting of a mythical sacred animal featuring the head of a phoenix, the tail of a dragon and the body of a turtle; a number of tablets with inscriptions from the reign of the well-known Qing Emperors; a rock which resembles the character for ‘heart’ in written Chinese; as well as a much acclaimed painting which is said to be the work of Tang Yin, a renowned artist of the Ming Dynasty era.
The idyllic setting of the palace is an attraction in itself as it is a delightfully picturesque and balmy location. The breathtaking Qishan Mountain creates a lovely backdrop to the complex and at the depths of the valley you will see the scenic Longqiu Pool. Visitors will be able to admire the flow of water down through the rocks. On a massive rock below the visitor will see the Chinese characters for ‘long qiu’. You will also see another boulder, with a flat surface which sounds like a drum when it is beaten. For this reason this boulder is known as the Immortal Drum Rock.
