The Brazen Palace occupies a prominent position in the historical annals of the country. During the height of its use, the building that stands today considered a refectory part of its complex. A fascinating feature of the structure is that it once featured what was known as a “simamalake”, which is where the Buddhist community gathered on days of the Full Moon, to recite passages from Buddhist scripture. Breathed to life by King Dutugemunu, it once stood nine massive stories high. It was completely razed to the ground during the rule of King Saddhatissa. The only remnants of this once-opulent site are 1,600 pillars standing in orderly rows of 40, evoking another era when the gleaming bronze roof shone stalwart and solemn under the sun, as tribute to a prosperous age.
