One of Sri Lanka’s most treasured historic sites is the ancient city of the Rock Fortress. If you are looking for things to do in Sigiriya, start with the main attraction, the towering rock that once held the palace of King Kassapa. The ‘palace in the sky’ took the form of a majestic lion that looked over the city from above. Access to the palace was through the mouth of the giant lion which was flanked by its own two paws. Though much of the palace was destroyed in a battle between the king and his brother, several features, including the lion’s paws remain to this day and can be seen at a halfway point.
A mirror wall inscribed with poems and songs is one of the main features of the site, beautiful works of art in the form of frescoes painted on one wall, is another. Climb to the very top of Sigiriya Rock and feast your eyes on three hundred and sixty degree views of the surrounding lands. Making your way down, explore the palace gardens which sprawl at the base of the rock boasting remarkable water fountains, ponds and lush foliage. To view thegiant rock from a different angle stop in at Hotel Sigiriya.
If a laborious climb up the steep rock is not your cup of tea, enjoy a serene hot air balloon ride and get a bird’s eye view of the ancient palace ruins. The Sigiriya Museum, is another attraction not to be missed. The complex is modelled on the rock fortress itself. The artefacts exhibited clearly depict life in the ancient kingdom. The unique experience the museum offers culminates in a spectacular diorama that intricately details the architectural feat accomplished by the ancient king.
