Sri Lanka has become quite popular for kitesurfing and for good reason; apart from great conditions for this water sport, you can also enjoy some breathtaking coastal backdrops, each different from the other.
Kalpitiya
Arguably the island’s most popular kitesurfing destination, Kalpitiya can be found along the north-western coastline. The lagoon here is ideal for this activity; the waters are flat and shallow, while the winds are quite strong. Tour specialists the likes of SoulTrek Sri Lanka offer kitesurfing excursions to Kalpitiya, while there are many kitesurfing schools and centres in the area as well.
Vella Island
In Sri Lanka, kitesurfing spots can be found away from the mainland too. Around an hour’s journey by boat north of Kalpitiya is Vella Island which offers a secluded escape where you can harness the wind. The waters are flat and conditions are ideal for enjoying downwinders too.
Arugam Bay
Located along the southeast coast, the island’s most well-known spot for surfing also offers some great kitesurfing opportunities too! One such spot in Arugam Bay is The Point which features cross-shore winds and is well suited for more intermediate kitesurfers.
Mannar
Another island destination, Mannar in the Northern Province also offers some fabulous conditions and coastal backdrops. Part of the charm is the chance to enjoy kitesurfing above a limestone shoal known as Adam’s Bridge that can be seen beneath the clear waters.
