A chain of six connecting bridges makes up the spectacular sight of the Barelang Bridge in Indonesia. Found about a one hour drive from Batam the bridge that spans over 2 kilometres. With its six different pieces it is today more of a tourist attraction than a transport method, although there’s a significant amount of traffic traveling through this every day.
The bridge connects the islands of Galang, Rempang and Batam, hence gathering its name from them. It consists of six bridges which are connected to form a 2km drive that takes about 50 minutes of drive time. The construction of the bridge was started in 1992 and it is called Jembantan Habibie by some locals in the area, after Jesuf Habibie who was in charge of the construction site at the time and who was striving to transform and industrialize the islands of Galang and Rempang in the line of what Batam is today.
The view from the bridge is spectacular, while the bridge itself is a sight to see with its long cables spread out like threads, creating a pattern against the bright and clear blue sky. The most popular bridge of them all is the Tengku Fisabilillah that connects the islands of Tonton and Batam and sprawls across 642 kilometres and is a cable stayed bridge. Spanning a 420 metre length is the cantilever style bridge of Tonton-Nipah while the girder bridge known as Setoko- Nipah bridge has a length of 270 metres. Setoko- Rempang bridge is yet another example of a cantilever bridge of 365 metre length. The bridges are a pride in the region and is a major tourist attraction with Tengku Fisabilillah being the most sought out one of all six of them. At night, the chain of bridges lies resplendent with the glow of their illuminations that combines purples hues together with a long stretch of orange neon lights that contrast well with the velvety darkness of the night.
