A bit about Ayurveda and its roots
Although this traditional system of rejuvenation and healing is much sought-after there are many who are unaware of its beginnings. Ayurveda when translated means ‘science of life’ and by this very meaning, we are lead to believe that Ayurveda is a system of healing established through the study of life. In fact, this ancient system of medicine emphasizes on the prevention and healing of disease through a balance between mind and body. While Ayurveda itself promotes the equilibrium of mind, body and soul, today it is recorded as the oldest system of healing in the world.
Ayurveda first originated around 5000 years ago in India and was passed down to many countries in South Asia including top tourists destinations such as Sri Lanka.
While Ayurveda is believed to have had its beginnings deeply rooted in the mythology of Mahabrahma (Hindu God), this system is thought to have been communicated to later generations through his teachings.
Sri Lanka and Ayurveda
With the introduction of this ancient system of healing to the world 5,000 years ago in India, Ayurveda spread quickly to its closest neighbour, Sri Lanka. Ironically, today, Sri Lanka’s indigenous system of medicine too has become Ayurveda. Ayurveda treatments offered in the island-nation is a combination of both Sinhala traditional medicine, Ayurveda and Siddha systems.
Treatments and where they are offered
Ayurveda comes in two types, namely; Langhana and Brimhna. Some of the more famous treatments of Ayurveda include Panchakarma which involves the elimination of toxins from the body while strengthening one’s metabolism. ‘Vamana’ can be described as the therapeutic process of induced vomiting. Vamana treatments allow clearing of the stomach and thoracic cavity. The Virechana method helps to clear out intestines by eliminating toxins from them. While there are many Ayurveda hotels in Sri Lanka that offer such traditional treatments, it’s more advisable that you consult more professional establishments like Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara which offer personalized treatments. It’s also better to seek advice from a qualified Ayurveda physician and analyze your present health status before you go ahead with any Ayurveda treatment.
