In this, the 21st century, Ayurveda healing is gaining more recognition and one sphere getting much attention is diabetes. The holistic discipline of Ayurveda focuses on the prevention and cure of any ailment through a unique synergy of body and mind. The core concept in Ayurveda healing is based on mind, body and soul and the five elements making up the universe which are earth, fire, water ,air and space or the ‘Panchamahabhutha’. When all these elements are combined they form bio-energetic forces called ‘Doshas’ namely ‘Pitta’,’ Vata’ or ‘Kapha’.
One of the key concepts in Ayurveda is the redress of the balance of the ‘Doshas’ for the achievement of holistic wellbeing. Ayurveda Sri Lanka is a thriving industry with Ayurveda resorts, spas, hospitals and clinics springing up all over the island. Diabetes Mellitus commonly known as diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease caused by the body’s inability to make proper use of glucose resulting in hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels and glycosuria or sugar in urine. If not managed carefully, diabetes can lead to blindness, strokes, backaches, nerve damage, amputation and other complications.
Ayurveda has identified 20 forms of diabetes or Prameha. Four are due to ‘Vata’ and six are due to ‘Pita’ and ten are due to ‘Kapha’. However, in Ayurveda, diabetes is considered to be mainly a ‘Kapha’ Dosha disease and all forms of diabetes will turn into Madhumeha or Diabetes mellitus if not treated properly.
