Part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient city of Anuradhapura offers much to explore; here are some tips for planning a visit.
Getting There
Anuradhapura is in the country’s North Central Province around 205 km from the commercial capital, Colombo and 169 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport. Apart from hiring a vehicle with a driver to get there, you can opt for public or private buses (five to six hours) or the train (five hours).
Where to Stay
You can easily find a place to stay including at luxury villas in Sri Lanka. When selecting accommodation, not only find one that is within easy reach of the historical site but offers unique experiences too. Properties like Uga Ulagalla provide bike tours of Anuradhapura which is a great way to see the sights.
Things to See
Since there are many attractions in Anuradhapura, do some research beforehand. Look to visit what is known as the “Atamasthana”; these are eight sacred sites which Lord Buddha is said to have visited. They are:
• Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya (sacred Bo Tree)
• Abhayagiri Dagaba
• Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba
• Jetavanaramaya
• Mirisawetiya Stupa
• Lovamahapaya
• Thuparamaya
• Lankarama
Keep in Mind
The ruins of Anuradhapura are open from 7:00am to 5:30pm; it can get quite hot and humid so begin your visit early morning. Wear light cotton clothing though remember that since these are sacred sites, to cover bare shoulders and legs. Wear comfy walking shoes / sandals and caps / hats but remove them when entering temples.
