History
King Kasyapa ruled from 477 AD to 495 AD. He fled the main kingdom of Anuradhapura after murdering the king –his father, and built his kingdom and fortress on the massive rock that is known as Sigiriya.
Inspiration
According to legend, it was believed that King Kasyapa wanted to build his kingdom to represent Alakamanda; the city of the Gods, and the black rock of Sigiriya surrounded by a thick lush forest seemed the ideal fit!
Construction
King Kasyapa was fortunate enough to have a work force of skilled labourers and craftsman of around 500,000 men, hundreds of elephants and bullocks to aid in the building of this majestic fortress.
