The culture of Bali is unique and has many fascinating aspects which will intrigue the visitor. It has the distinction of being the island with the largest Hindu majority population on the globe. This sets it apart from other islands in the vast nation of Indonesia.
Aspects of Hinduism pervade many facets of life in Bali. One of these aspects which will come to the notice of any visitor are the little offerings which are made in each home, workplace, shop or restaurant. These unmistakable little trays are made each day and feature a diverse array of offerings; sticky rice, flowers, salt, biscuits, and even coffee and cigarettes. These are set out with a sprinkling of holy water and are arranged with sticks of incense.
However the offshoot of Hinduism as it is practiced in Bali differs greatly from the mainstream Hinduism of India. There is one major deity, Sanghyang Widi Wasa the all-encompassing god of whom other deities like Shiva and Vishnu are mere manifestations. This supreme god is represented by an empty throne adorned with a chessboard pattern motif.
Balinese are accomplished craftsmen and highly skilled sculptors, with courtyards and temples adorned with images of deities, protective demons and other guardians. Today many sculptors create figures to appeal to the tourist market.
The Balinese music and dance are renowned as cultural highlights, and always captivate visitors. The local orchestra known as gamelan and the well-known shadow puppet performances are considered to be distinctive features of local culture. Balinese dances are full of dramatic and visual impact, with the best-known including the Calonarang, a vivid presentation depicting the defeat of black magic and the lion dance or barong, a ritualistic presentation of the contest of good and evil. Other well-known dance forms include the monkey dance kecak and the legong keraton, a special presentation of the dance of celestial nymphs.
The festivals of Bali are also remarkable for their colourful and vibrant nature. Highlights include Galungan when ancestors and deities are said to visit the world and the Hindu New Year which is preceded by vibrant parades culminating in a day of strictly observed total silence.
