Did you know that a blowhole is a hole in the rock that allows seawater to shoot up into the air, creating a spectacular fountain-like display? One of the most well-known of these is the Hummanaya Blowhole in Sri Lanka and here’s more on this spellbinding attraction!
Where Can it Be Found?
The Hummanaya Blowhole can be found in the town of Dickwella along the south coast of Sri Lanka; luxury resorts in Tangalle make an ideal base for excursions here. Once you reach the blowhole location, you will have to walk past a village (which takes around 20 minutes) to reach the viewpoint to witness this natural phenomenon.
What to Expect
Even before you view this blowhole, which is only around 20 minutes from beachside properties like Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, you will hear the distinctive sound it makes when the pressure builds up. There’s a cliffside vantage point from where you can take in the sight of the water towering to the sky sometimes reaching heights of up to 30 metres which is truly impressive; it is, after all, the second-largest blowhole on the planet!
Optimal Time
While the Hummanaya Blowhole can be visited at any time, remember that it’s best viewed during high tide when there’s more water pressure or in the monsoon season. A popular option is to head to this site at sunset to capture a truly magical picture of the water sporting upwards against the backdrop of the sky painted in fiery hues.
Keep in Mind
This natural spectacle generally occurs every 10 to 15 minutes so if you miss seeing it as you arrive, don’t fret, you just need to wait a bit more before the next stunning spray! That said, check the weather conditions and tide schedule before visiting especially during low tide when the blowhole won’t be as spectacular. Also, follow all safety guidelines and instructions provided by local authorities while visiting this attraction.
