There’s a whole new world of cuisine from Mozambique that has not made their place in the world yet and remains obscure. Inspired by its Portuguese past, Mozambique has a great variety of delicious fare.
Sandes de Queijo
Served on Portuguese white bread called Pao, these are a typical cheese sandwich, but atypical in every way. Comes toasted so well the cheese melts.
Piri Piri on Everything
Piri Piri sauce is a Portuguese marinade made from spices and chilli and is used to season almost everything. You can get this in chicken, on your rice or with your fries. You can ask for a dish at the restaurant in Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort if you’re unsure and just want a taste.
Ncima
A staple in the local cuisine but rarely found in a Mozambique restaurant, this dish is made of ground maize boiled with water into a porridge, topped with meat curry. Perfect breakfast for energy all day.
Prego Rolls
Using a Portuguese white bread called Pao, Prego rolls serve steak in spicy piri piri sauce. Delicious and filling.
Matata
One of the few local dishes that weren’t influenced by the Portuguese, Matata is a wholesome stew of clam and peanuts, served with rice.
Coconut Rice
Full basmati rice cooked in coconut milk and sometimes dashed with toasted coconut; this is a must try dish in Mozambique. It serves as a great foil for all the spicy dishes that number local cuisine.
Curry
While not as flamboyant as South Asian curries, Mozambique has its own set of spices which they use to make prawn or chicken curries.
