Sri Lanka’s most action packed beach, Hikkaduwa, home to Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon; can be found south of the country’s capital, Colombo. It is popular with young people for its party atmosphere, which comes alive mainly during the holiday season. Each year, the infamous ‘Hikka Fest’ takes place around midyear. The social event is a beach party that lasts five days and nights with music, food, drink, competitions and other activities. However, you will find holidaymakers year round in Hikkaduwa. hotels, bars and eateries are always open late, catering to beach goers.
It is also popular with those who simply want to enjoy the sea. The natural beauty of this seaside town extends into the ocean and its coral reefs. The main reef is four kilometers in length and easy to explore because it is close to the shore where waters are calm and shallow. There are several different types of coral as well as an abundance of marine creatures, which make for an interesting afternoon of snorkelling. Glass bottom boat rides are also popular, along with other water sports like surfing and scuba diving. Experienced divers may want to explore dive sites like Kiralagala, Godagala or Black Coral Point.
Hikkaduwa has many little family run eateries serving seafood bursting with Sri Lankan flavours, they should be easy enough to find while strolling through the town. In neighbouring Koggala you will find the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, which is housed in the Sri Lankan author, Martin Wickremesinghe’s own ancestral home. Just by Hikkaduwa town, you will Seenigama temple. It is a pretty sight, perched on its own little island. Further south is the village of Ahangama, home of a small fishing community that is famous for stilt fishing. A traditional fishing technique that creates a remarkable sight for observers.
