Having been a den for pirates and then later turned into a fishing village a few centuries ago, Aberdeen situated at the tip of Hong Kong’s southern region has many interesting places to visit.

In recent times modernization has swept through Aberdeen and it’s no longer the little town it used to be. Aberdeen, has now been transformed into a resort, mostly frequented by those in the metropolis.

With Aberdeen’s colourful history, there are still parts of this area that retain its roots that were derived from fishing. Tourists who want to have a feel for the areas traditional means of survival could venture down to Bei Fung Tong Typhoon Shelter where there are many sampans and other old fishing boats.

The junks are actually considered as homes by the fishermen, and they create a stark contrast when gathered at the harbour – side by side with Hong Kong’s high risers imposing over them. For the curious observer there are licensed boat operators who are more than willing to take tourists on a sampan ride and initiate them into the life of a boat dweller.

And what would a visit to a waterside resort be without some delicious seafood cuisine? Travellers could choose between a romantic seafood dinner at a beautiful floating restaurant at Jumbo or perhaps lunch at Tai Bak Seafood Boat. All floating restaurants could be found at the Aberdeen Harbour. To reach the harbour ferryboat shuttles are available free of charge.

Aside from the cuisine this harbour resort also has a few places to visit such as the Country Park. This 1,000 odd acres of land saw its development during Hong Kong’s early days and is a good place for a quiet stroll. The promenade is another interesting place to visit. The pier by the shore of the promenade is where tourists will find boat men willing to take tourists to islands close by- an ideal treat for the adventurous traveller.

For the avid shopper the commercial area of Wan Chai is a good place to pick up some souvenirs to take back home.
