For those visiting Mui Ne in Vietnam, a not to be missed attraction is Prince’s Castle which provides some truly mesmerising views; here’s more on this fascinating site.
Site’s Location
It stands at the top of Ong Hoang Hill in the coastal port city of Phan Thiet and is within a 10-minute drive from properties such as Anantara Mui Ne Resort. When heading here from your Mui Ne resort, keep in mind that there’s a parking fee though there’s no charge to enter the estate itself.
Some History
The ‘castle’ was in fact, a large estate house built by the French Duke De Montpensier in 1911; he was said to be quite taken up with the hill’s amazing views which led him to build his estate here. Originally, it covered an area of around 536 square metres though today all that remains are its foundations.
More to See
Even though only featuring foundations, the site still offers much to experience apart from the stunning views. Other notable elements include military bunkers that date to the French occupation and an old watchtower. Nearby, is the tomb of Han Mac Tu, a Vietnamese poet who often wrote about Prince’s Castle and its setting.
Cham Towers
On your visit, you can also head to the Po Shanu Cham Towers from the 8th century. These three towers are historical landmarks of the Champa Kingdom and were constructed in honour of three Hindu deities namely Lord Shiva, Nandi and Agni; there’s also a small pagoda here that add to the site’s charm.
