The Hanthana mountain range hike is roughly 7.9 km and depending on which route you take can be easy or very dangerous. So, it is always advisable to go with a local guide, so you won’t get lost.
Many Peaks
The Hanthana range has many peaks famous among which are the Urugala and Katusu Konda peak called “lizard’s back” for its unique shape. The range is perfect for ornithologists as there are so many birds that can be seen in the area. The Hanthana range sits above the city of Kandy and from its many peaks, you will be able to see all kinds of views of Galaha, Kandy and beyond.
Where to Stay for an Early Start
Because it is famous as a hiking location for university students, there may be some markers on the way. But the easiest way to tackle the peaks is to stay over at a nearby Airbnb or hotel, the closest being Amaya Hills, Kandy.
Experience the Sunrise
If you are planning to hike the whole range remember that it can be quite time-consuming, roughly 11 hours but extremely worth it for the views that it will provide. It is a perspective that you will not be able to get anywhere else, especially the sunrise.
It is highly recommended staying the night at any of the hotels in Kandy, closer to the mountain the better so you can wake up before dawn and get to Urugala for the best view of the sunrise. The stone platform juts out over the city sprawled below it.
