Batticaloa Dutch Fort
Perched approximately 40 minutes away from Passikudah, the Batticaloa Dutch Fort first came into being in 1628 as a trading and administrative centre. The architecture of the building derives inspiration from the colonized culture and reflects a blend of cultures.
The Beginnings
First established by the Portuguese on a small island, the fort was extending into one of the swamps of the lagoon surrounding it. 10 years later, the fort was seized by the Dutch and remained in their possession until it was passed down to the British in 1745.
