Kalutara is the first large town one comes across when travelling to down south Sri Lanka from Colombo. Popular among locals for its religious connotations, and as the point where one of the main four rivers in Sri Lanka meets the sea, Kalutara is rapidly becoming a popular tourist destination.
Getting to Kalutara is a simple task, as the town is located a mere 40km away from Colombo. One cannot take the highway, though, for the routes are different. You can take the bus down the Galle road or take the train to Kalutara, both of which will provide you with an almost unbroken view of the Indian Ocean. Finding accommodation in Kalutara – hotel, resort or a simple B&B – is as easy as ABC, what with international hotel chains establishing themselves in the city as well. You will not be in need of comfort or known service with these around.
In terms of sightseeing, Kalutara has many options. You can decide to spend your time by the sea, and enjoy a true islander feeling. Or you can visit Kalutara Bodhiya, a highly important place of worship among the Buddhists which is located less than 15 minutes away from AVANI Kalutara Resort. For a bit of local culture, you can visit the Basket Centre, where you will be able to see the local craftspeople weaving traditional baskets out of palm fronds and the like. If you are able to wake up before the crack of dawn, you can make your way down to Beruwala fishing harbour to see an unlikely blend of exotic fish and authentic local life. Another popular place to visit, especially for those with children, is the Richmond Castle – a beautiful architectural wonder with a proud history. If you are looking for some excitement, Bandaragama Karting Circuit is located quite close by too. You can pay them a visit and go go-karting with your friends and try to emerge the victor.
With a loud and proud history of its own dating back to the kingdoms, with a loud and proud story to tell regarding its role in gaining independence to Sri Lanka, Kalutara is a coastal city that really deserves your appreciation.
