One of the best places in Thailand for a holiday, Chiang Rai in the country’s far north has much to offer and here’s what you should know when planning your visit.
When to Go
There’s something to discover here year-round; that said, November to February is when you can experience the best weather with average daytime temperatures of around 25°C and little rain. From March to May the heat increases, while the monsoon rains arrive from June to October; you can still enjoy travel during these periods however and rates will be less too.
Accommodation
When it comes to staying in a resort or hotel, Chiang Rai offers diverse options. Ideally, look for accommodation that lets you experience the region’s rich beauty and features all-inclusive packages. Consider SHA Extra+ certified properties like Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort which is on a jungle hilltop and has an ethical elephant camp that lets you get up close to these gentle giants.
Top Attractions
Amongst the top attractions in Chiang Rai is Wat Rong Khun or White Temple with its stunning artistic creations. Also, of note is the striking Wat Rong Suea Ten or Blue Temple and Black House Museum with more fascinating artworks; other sites like Wat Phra Kaew, the Hall of Opium Museum and Chiang Rai Night Bazaar are worth visiting too.

You can enjoy longtail boat trips that take you from the Ruak River to the famed Mekong River. You can also plan excursions to the town of Mae Sai on the border with Myanmar, trek up Doi Mae Salong to take in breathtaking views and visit the Choui Fong Tea Plantation. Nature lovers can head to the idyllic Khun Korn Waterfall at the Nam Tok Khun Korn National Forest Park.
