The capital of Vietnam, Hanoi has much to discover and if it’s going to be your first time in this city, these insights and tips will help.
Best Time to Go
The optimal time to visit Hanoi is in the dry season which is generally from October to March; you can expect pleasant weather with lots of sunshine though, in December and January, there will be more crowds too. From April to September, temperatures will rise, and it can rain though usually not for long periods so you can still enjoy exploring; what’s more, rates and tourists will be less too!
Selecting Accommodation
While there are plenty of accommodation options, consider staying at serviced apartments in Hanoi which will provide more flexibility and space. Ideal areas to stay in or close to would be the Old Quarter and West Lake which are great for sightseeing, shopping and dining. Properties that combine all these elements include Somerset West Lake Hanoi which offers self-contained apartments, free Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping, a breakfast lounge, a pool, a gym and more which add to the convenience and comfort.
Sightseeing Highlights
Since there are so many attractions in Hanoi, make an itinerary that features the key sites of interest. The Old Quarter with its colourful markets, 15th-century architecture and foodie delights is not to be missed. Also visit the Tran Quoc Pagoda and One Pillar Pagoda for insights into the nation’s Buddhist heritage, idyllic Hoan Kiem Lake, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex and the Temple of Literature; taking in traditional puppetry at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre will be memorable as well.
Getting Around
If you find centrally located accommodation, many of the sites will be walking distance away. However, you can also get around using taxis which will be convenient though ensure the meter is working. Alternatively, you can travel around the city via cyclos which are three-wheeled bicycle taxis or motorcycle taxis, though bargain and agree on the price before you begin the journey. Another option would be to use public buses which have stops at or near major attractions.
