If it’s going to be your first time travelling to Sri Lanka, there’s much to look forward to though prior planning will be useful; here’s a brief guide to help you do exactly that!
When to Visit
The island is a year-round destination, though the high season from December to March is when the weather is at its best. To enjoy surfing on your vacation in Sri Lanka, head to Arugam Bay on the east coast between May and September; during this time the south and west coasts are hit with the “Yala” monsoon.
Plan Your Itinerary
Planning your sightseeing itinerary is no easy task since Sri Lanka has so much to see and do! Engaging the services of local tour specialists, the likes of Aitken Spence Travels is worth considering since they offer tours covering culture, history, beaches, wildlife and adventure. Go through the different attractions and find those that you want to visit.
Packing Smart
When it comes to packing, light cotton clothing is ideal, while flipflops and sneakers are good to have too. Sunscreen is a must and insect repellent will be useful. If heading to the mountains, pack some warm attire and also make sure to have clothing that covers bare shoulders and legs if visiting sacred sites.
Currency & Transactions
The local currency used is the Sri Lankan Rupee (Rs.). ATMs are easy to find in the cities, while main shops, restaurants and hotels accept major credit and debit cards. Do keep in mind, however, that tuk-tuks, public transport, small eateries and grocery stores generally operate on cash.
