Nam Phong National Park is spread over northeast Thailand’s Kohn Kaen and Chaiyaphum provinces and is 50 km west of Khon Kaen City and the park is divided into two sections.
Where to stay
Always choose to stay at a hotel in Khon Kaen, as it’ll be close to many attractions like the National Park. If your preference is for a conveniently located hotel with high end modern comforts then the AVANI Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Center would be a good choice in accommodation.
Geography
The Park’s northern section lies in the Phu Phan Kham Mountain range .The southern section is in the Phu Meng Mountain range. The mountains are of sandstone. The headwaters of the Nam Phong, Chi and Choen rivers are within the Park.
Vegetation
The main type of forest vegetation is dipterocarp (80%) mixed with deciduous forest and grassland. Wild almond, Cycas and Siamese Sal are among the tree species found here.
Fauna
Barking deer, wolf, wild boar, porcupine and pangolin are among the Park’s fauna population. Richard’s Pipit, white wagtails, kingfisher and munia are among the Nam Phong bird population.
Tourist Attractions
The Park’s northern section is home to part of the Ubolratana Dam Reservoir. The sunsets over the reservoir is marvelous. The Hing Chang Si view point offers panoramic views of the reservoir, forest and Khon Kaen to the east.
The rocks here are used by elephants to scratch their flanks. Pre historic rock paintings are found here. Other attractions include Khan Pon Volcanic Rock Well, Pha Sawan Cliff Terrace (more panoramic views),Phalan Chat Rock Terrace and Phu Meng Summit.
