For some outdoor adventure and island escapades, the Ang Thong National Marine Park in Thailand is the place to go and here’s more on what you need to know.
What to Expect
Set amidst the idyllic waters of the Gulf of Thailand and thriving marine life, the protected Ang Thong National Marine Park features 42 islands and covers an area of more than 100 sq. km. Except for one island, the rest are uninhabited and feature unspoilt beaches and coves, impressive limestone mountains, hidden lakes and magical waterfalls.
Planning Your Trip
You can enjoy easy access to this attraction if you’re based on islands like Koh Samui; resort options here such as the SHA Extra+ certified Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort offer speedboat excursions to the marine park. Day trips are a popular option, while the best period to go is from March to October when the sea is calmer.
Islands to Visit
While there are many islands, some are more well known. This includes the main island, Koh Wua Talap which has lovely white beaches, a breathtaking viewpoint and the Bua Bok Cave. Also, of interest are Koh Sam Sao which features a coral reef, Koh Mae Ko with its emerald saltwater lake and the inhabited Koh Paluay where one will find a sea-gipsy community.
Things to Do
For active travellers, there are plenty of things to do in Ang Thong National Marine Park including snorkelling around the islands where you can spot colourful fish and other marine life such as turtles and corals too. Some spots are ideal for diving, while kayaking and swimming, as well as hiking amidst island jungles, are not to be missed either.
