Once upon a time, Kalutara was an important trading point for spices. Its name is derived from the Kalu Ganga or the Black River which flows peacefully through the city.
Capital
Back in the 11th century, Kalutara was a temporarily made capital on the orders of a South Indian Prince. Later on, coconut trees were introduced here for purposes of external trade. The Kalutara Fort dates back to the time when the Dutch, the British and the Portuguese fought for control.
