The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology is located in Vadanemmeli along East Coast Road in Chennai. The Crocodile Park is dedicated to herpeto faunal conservation, research, and education and is the very first crocodile breeding centre in all of Asia. It is home to one of the world’s largest collections of crocodiles and alligators which include 14 of the 23 existing species as well as three crocodile species, that are all considered endangered, and are native to India. The centre also aims to educate visitors about wildlife and the environment and the need to conserve as well.
In addition to housing crocodiles such as the gharial, mugger and marsh species, the 10-acre park also provides a home for many turtle, birds and snake species. Of the latter, you will find kinds such as the great Indian rock python.
Also referred to as the ‘Croc Bank’, the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology arranges nigh safaris as well. These are held between the hours of 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm during the days of Tuesday until Saturday. So if you wish to experience some out of the ordinary you must pre-reserve tours as they are available by advance booking only.
