Overview
Formerly referred to by the name of ‘Torrington Square,’ this appealing structure stands testament to when Sri Lanka obtained freedom from years of colonial rule. Independence Square has made a name for itself on the back of its natural beauty, architectural elements and of course, the proud history that it lays claim to.
Location
Found a mere 6 km from the Colombo Fort Railway Station and a short distance from Cinnamon Grand Colombo which is a luxury hotel Colombo has to offer from where one can commence journeying throughout the city, this cultural landmark finds refuge within the pleasing environs of the Cinnamon Gardens area.
Features
The construction of the Memorial Hall has been modelled on the Audience Hall or ‘Magul Maduwa’ in Kandy and in turn, is equipped with stunning pillars and columns of exquisite detail and design. Statues of lions are placed around the Hall while a towering statue of Sri Lanka’s 1st Prime Minister, the late D.S. Senanayake greets visitors at the front of the said attraction. Moving over to its basement, one will discover the Independence Memorial Museum which displays statuettes of national heroes who gave off their best in order to secure Sri Lanka’s freedom from the British.
Activities
Sprawling lawns, well-paved walking paths and demarcated cycling tracks are very much a part of Independence Square which add to the allure of whiling away the hours here. Also, you can move off in the direction of the nearby Arcade Independence Square where you can shop, grab a bite to eat and watch as Colombo’s bustle unfolds before you.
