History

Built by Chief Teleka of The Basia(cat) Clan at the beginning of the 19^th century, the Kome caves served as a shield against Lifaqane Wars and cannibalism. To date, the caves are occupied by descendants belonging to these clans. The caves also contain faded San paintings pinpointing San occupancy during the early days.

Dwellings

Kome caves are occupied by several families who lead centuries-old lifestyles. Their homes are built inside the caves of the mountain slope and the walls are protected by a mix of mud and cow dung. Interestingly, there is also a small fireplace on the floor helping the families to stay warm during the cool climes.
