Close to the historic province of Ayutthaya, you will encounter Bang Pa In, which is home to the only neo-Gothic temple in Thailand. Make the Wat Niwet Thammaprawat part of your Bangkok cruise tour such as those offered by Anantara Cruises Thailand and explore the scenic Chayo Phraya River by embarking on exciting Bangkok cruises to discover more about this incredible locality.
The journey to Wat Niwet Thammaprawat is an exciting one in and of itself, as you will have to embark on a cable car that moves across the river, and controlled by the temple’s monks. Built in 1878 by King Rama V, the temple has been styled according to the famous and towering cathedrals of Europe, complete with sharply arched eaves and exquisite stained-glass windows, which portray scenes from Buddhist mythology. The plinth that bears the main statue of the golden Buddha bears was fashioned to resemble the altar seen in cathedrals, and the Ubosot wall opposite the main Buddha image bears a window that depicts King Rama V. Within the temple grounds, you will also encounter a sundial that presents accurate time measures, as Ayutthaya is situated only fourteen degrees north of the Equator. The Wat Niwet Thammaprawat is a beautiful and unusual temple which must be visited during your time in the city.
