Amongst the city’s most recognisable landmarks, the Wheel of Brisbane beside the river offers memorable rides the whole family can enjoy; here’s more on this attraction.
Planning a Visit
This structure is in the South Bank Parklands near the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Only around a 12-minute walk from Oaks Brisbane Casino Tower Suites, it’s also close to the Cultural Centre Bus Station and South Brisbane Train Station; it’s open from 10:00am to 8.00pm (Sunday to Thursday) and 10:00am to 10.00pm (Friday & Saturday).
Launch & Design
Easy to reach from Brisbane city hotels near the river, this attraction was inaugurated in 2008 as part of the Riverfire event held each year. It towers to a height of 60 metres and was designed by Ronald Bussink; he is synonymous with other famous wheels including those in Manchester, Kuala Lumpur and Paris.
Captivating Rides
While the Wheel of Brisbane is great to photograph day or night, not to be missed is a ride on one of its 42 air-conditioned gondolas. Each gondola can accommodate about eight people (six adults and two kids) and the ride takes approximately 15 minutes and includes a stop at its highest point for magical panoramas.
The Amazing Views
Your ticket features a city map with some of the attractions in Brisbane you can view from the top; these include Mount Coot-tha, the Botanical Gardens, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the GABBA sports stadium and the Goodwill Bridge. As part of the ride, there’s an audio guide that offers more insights into these sites.
