The well-known Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery located in Hong Kong is a popular attraction for both local devotees as well as visiting sightseers. Although it is not officially a functioning Buddhist monastery as there are no monks in residence at the site and it is administered by laypersons, it remains a prominent Buddhist venue. As its name indicates, this temple is renowned for its collection of almost 13,000 Buddha statues.
The monastery was founded by Yuet Kai, a pious Buddhist layman who wished to make a substantial contribution to his chosen religion. Using a sizable donation from a wealthy merchant, Yuet Kai commenced the construction of the shrine in 1949. Intriguingly, in spite of his advanced age, this staunch Buddhist personally carried the necessary construction materials to the building site, with the help of his disciples.
Today, the preserved body of this revered individual may be seen within a glass container in the monastery’s principal hall. This unusual tribute has become an attraction in itself, drawing a steady stream of curious observers. To reach the main monastery, the visitor must ascend the hill upon which the compound stands; the path up the hillock is flanked on each side by numerous golden Buddha figures, every one unique and depicting a different pose.
However, there is no doubt that the main attractions of this temple are within its walls. In the main hallway, you will see three massive Buddha figures, each gilded and resplendent. The walls of the principal temple building are adorned with literally thousands of miniature Buddhas made of ceramic and beautifully gilded. Each statuette is about one foot in height and displays a unique expression and pose. Each also depicts an inscription stating the name of its particular donor.
Other prominent attractions at the monastery compound are the various pavilions dedicated to different deities such as Kwun Yam (otherwise known as Quan Yin), Skanda, and Manjusri. Each of these pavilions is large with an impressive statue of the deity. With so much to see and admire, a visit to the monastery will certainly be a memorable experience.
