Located in Balapitiya which is a town about 80 km away from Colombo. It is a wetland that is spread over 900 hectares with 64 islands and mostly water. It is the perfect place for a boat safari. It’s only about 21 minutes of a drive inland from Heritance Ahungalla Hotel so plan for a 2 to 3-hour boat ride when you are deciding on the time.
A Habitat
The habitat is lush in mangroves and is a wetland environment that is home to a lot of birds and animals that are part of the aquatic ecosystem. The surrounding villagers are mostly fisherman while there are also cinnamon peelers carrying forward an old tradition.
Kraal Fishing
Kraal fishing is called Jaa Kotu by the local fishermen and involves bamboo constructions in the middle of the river with nets that spread out across the river. When navigating these areas safari boats need to be careful.
Fish Therapy
You can also engage in some fish therapy on the Madu Ganga. It is free for children and costs about Rs. 100 to submerge your feet in a tank of fish and let them nibble away all your dead skin.
Temple
On the largest of the 64 islands stands a temple that harkens from ancient times. The Bo tree planted there is said to be over 600 years old. Recent archaeological digs revealed a granite toilet that is dated back to at least 1000 years ago.
