Khamthieng House is a very quite museum located in the middle of a concrete jungle that is Bangkok. But the great thing about this site is that it is so tranquil within, you will not even realize the surrounding area has towering hotels and shopping centres.
This fascinating house is believed to have been built in 1848 by the Royal Princess Mae Saed on the banks of the Ping River in Chiang Mai province. It was later handed over to the Siam Society under royal patronage in 1963 and was installed as a museum in 1966. It is named after Mae Saed’s granddaughter Mae Khamthieng.
The lifestyle of the Lan Na Thai household can be seen through this museum. The native crafts, daily necessities and ritual tools that are exhibited offer a glimpse of the royal nobility and this site is known as one of the finest examples of period architecture.
On the ground level under the main building of the museum a 3D animated short film is featured on Lan Na Thai village life. Assorted utensils, a weir model, a functioning loom and various traps made out of bamboo or rattan are few of the exhibits of the Khamthieng House. The upstairs lead to the veranda and guests are warmly welcomed with soft musical tunes. Here, an LED monitor showcases a short film of the lineage of the house owners. There are also traditional cooking recipes displayed in the kitchen area. With much more to see within an hour you will be able to explore this amazing museum and get an insight into local culture.
