The Central Market is considered one of the famous cultural heritage sites in Kuala Lumpur. It was constructed in 1928 and is known as a very familiar landmark in the area. It can be visited easily from any of the 4-star hotels in Kuala Lumpur thanks to its situation.
Celebrating Heritage
The Malaysian National Heritage Department declared the 120-year-old Central Market a Heritage site. The market has undergone many changes and renovations over the years, the most significant in the 1980’s when it went from being a simple wet market to one that also sells traditional creations.
Celebrating Culture
The central market plays host to all kinds of vendors that display their best wares during festivals like the Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Diwali. Depending on the festival the highlight is given to the ethnicity or religion that celebrates and the displays are given prominence alongside art exhibitions and handicrafts.
The Merchandise
The merchandise available at the central market are cheap and of high quality. They follow a traditional vein as most products you can buy range from batiks, souvenirs, sculptures, embroidery, and carvings.
The stalls are divided into various zones made distinctive by the vendors’ ethnicity. The purpose of this is to ensure that visitors are easily able to understand the collaboration of cultures in Malaysia.
Where is it?
The central market is placed in a strategic location and is accessible by all public transport stations. It is only a 15 drive from Silka Maytower, Kuala Lumpur for example, in Jalan Hang Kasturi. It is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
