During the Tang Dynasty in China, there lived a famous poet named Du Fu during the time period of 618 to 907. Even though born and bred in the city called Gongyi City in the Henan Province, he did not find peace to live in his hometown as the An-Shi Rebellion broke out. After fleeing from Gongyi City, Chengdu was the city which this great poet chose to live. As a result the Du Fu Cottage was built in 760.
Over two hundred and forty great poems have been written within the walls of this cottage during the four years that Du Fu lived in Chengdu. Since this cottage has inspired a great poet to come up with some of the most amazing masterpieces, this places is named as the “Sacred Land” in Chinese literature. Even though this was damaged after its owner abandoned it, a new temple was built in this land to pay tribute to the great person who had done so much for Chinese poetry.
Once you enter this sacred land you would be transported to a different world, away from the hustle and bustle. From the very beginning traditional Chinese gardening would welcome the visitor, where there would be streams flowing, interwoven bridges and pavilions, greenery that comes from the bamboo trees and plum trees that sway gently in the wind. It doesn’t matter which season anyone visits this place; they would always find sweet smelling flowers to welcome the guest. During the spring the plum blossoms would fill trees as well as the pathways decorating the garden as a carpet. The lotus flowers would take over the lakes during summer time and would pass the baton to the chrysanthemums in autumn. During the cold freezing weather in winter the orchids would still bloom and uplift the spirits of anyone who sets foot. It can be said that nature plays a vital role in this landscape.
