As another year draws to a close, you might on the lookout for an island getaway where you can reflect upon the year that took place, or even enter 2017. The tropical island of Sri Lanka holds many such options when it comes to special year-end tours and packages to suit the needs of any traveller from any walk of life, customised to take you to wherever you wish to visit on the remarkable island of Sri Lanka, whether it be beaches or mountains.
A noteworthy locale worth visiting at this time would be ‘Annaiwilundawa’, a wetland sanctuary consisting of six man-made water tanks and three peripheral tanks that are interconnected to create a complex irrigation system. This system creates an ideal habitat for many bird species prevalent on the island, and is a highly sought after location for bird-watching. The best times to visit are between October and November when majority of species are easily visible. The sanctuary is located close to an iconic hotel in Wadduwa, known as The Blue Water Wadduwa.
If you prefer to watch whales more than birds, then the coastal town of Kalpitiya is sure to interest you. Spinner Dolphins in numbers ranging to two thousand have been known to be witnessed during the month of November. These Dolphins aren’t easily scared off, and are known to swim next to boats, truly giving you a sight to remember. From the months of December through till April, the more secluded Northern towns, as well as the Southernmost towns, become hotspots for whale-watching, with species ranging from Dolphins to even Blue Whales.
