One of the most famous and spectacular wildlife scenes in the world unfolds near the Minneriya reservoir in Sri Lanka, between the months of July and September (dry season). During this period the region dries out completely, resulting in massive herds of elephants congregating around the reservoir, enjoying the lush surroundings.
Minneriya is located nearby to Sigiriya, a former capital of Sri Lanka and a place of utmost importance. Its key claim to fame is the Lion Rock, former kingdom of King Kassyappa. Once you arrive in Colombo, instead of spending hours on the road, you can opt for an Air Taxi. Sri Lanka is renowned for the fact that you can get from one place to another within hours, due to its small size. However, with Cinnamon Air, you can shorten the time to minutes, while getting aerial views of the paradise island.
What’s captivating about the entire occurrence is the fact that it is the largest migration of elephants in the world. During these months, herds of 300-400 elephants can be seen, as they come from all directions beyond and gather around the reservoir. Another fascinating observation made by wildlife specialists is that these elephants do not just gather to drink water and feed off the lush greenery; they come to socialise and even mate!
Even the biggest wildlife adventure parks in Kenya and Botswana do not feature such a wonder! In fact the Minneriya Elephant Gathering is listed in the Top 6 of Lonely Planet’s Guide to Wildlife Spectacles of the World. Wildlife experts say that this event may have gone on for centuries and is a sight not to be missed.
Cinnamon Air flies direct to Sigiriya daily at 10am. The 30-minute flight gives you amazing views of Sri Lanka’s wilderness, mountains and much more. The view you get off the Lion Rock itself is worth the trip.
