At first sight, it is impossible to think that the living water park is meant for anything scientific, with its picturesque sights of intermingling water ways merging with forest greenery and meadows and banks of riversides suggestive of a romance of nature rather than an experience of science . It is like a picture of peace, broken only by the frolicking laughter of children, who add life and mirth to the stillness of the picture.
However the park has more depth than perhaps its now crystal clear waters care to reveal. It is one extremely successful water conservation project in China and few can only imagine the harsh, polluted waters that under the miraculous works of biological transformation turned into the natural clear waters which the viewers witness today.
This ravishing park tinged with greenery is found in Chengdu which is the capital of Sichuan province. The park is indeed the concept of Betsy Demon who is an American environmentalist together with Margie Ruddick who is a landscape artist from Philadelphia. The project which began in 1966 came to a successful closure in 1988. This award winning water park is indeed China’s first artificial wetland water project and it utilizes ecological principles to convert the polluted waters of the Funan river that drifts through the city to convert into water that is so clear that it is claimed to be appropriate for swimming. The filthy waters of the river is passed through several under water channels and into artificial marshes and is subjected to the work of natural resources of cleansing and detoxifying to become clear, purified water.
Today the park is a nook of tranquility as well as a focus of some healthy water based entertainment. The lavish water ways are banked by greenery tinged with brilliant flowers and melting away into terraced fields and forestry faraway onto either side. Children can float and splash along the water ways in their floaters and enjoy the best of water splashes. To complete the entertainment, there’s a delighful tea house along side, a huge Ferris wheel situated across the water while the amphitheatre supplies a peaceful melody of Chinese opera from time to time of an evening.
