The Al Bastakiya District is a historical district in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is one of the emirate’s oldest residential areas. The area is covered in small, winding lanes and the best way to explore it is by foot. The district is situated along Dubai Creek and includes a variety of old buildings such as the Al Fahidi Fort, the emirate’s oldest building. Most buildings here feature windtowers or windcatchers, which are designed to increase ventilation.
The area was developed during the 1890s and was settled by the more affluent citizens of socity. However, the discovery of oil meant that more locals became wealthy and many residents left the Al Bastakiya District in favour of other parts of the emirate. Al Bastakiya, along with the Al Souk Al Kabir, eventually became the preferred residential spot for expatriates. During the 1970s a major part of Al Bastakiya was demolished to make way for a new office building. The remaining areas fell into disrepair and only certain buildings, such as the Majlis Gallery (an art centre), was preserved. Most buildings here were converted into warehouses.
Eventually in 1989 the Dubai Municipality decided to demolish the remaining area, but this move was opposed by several residents. The residents even managed to draft the support of Prince Charles who, when visiting the emirate, suggested that Bastakiya should be preserved. A project to restore the area to its former glory started in 2005.
