What put Koh Phangan, on the map is not its once thriving fisheries industry or the coconut cultivation which was pursued by its early inhabitants. Instead, the small island that belongs to Thailand which mostly consists of mountainous jungle depends on the inflow of funds through tourism.
Needless to say, the Phangan resorts are heavily patronized throughout the year, there is plenty of activities lined up for visitors and depending on the coast you choose the merry making options are diverse.
The island commenced claiming its prized tourists after the commercialization of what is known as the monthly ‘Full Moon Party’; an all-night bash with booze, food, music, and entertainment. In fact, the event was such a resounding success that it has now grown into a chain of events including the ‘Half Moon Party’ and ‘Dark Moon Party’.
These extravaganzas are held on the Haad Rin Beach which draws in crowds from all corners of the island spreading as far as Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas since there are shuttles from all over, especially for the parties.
Diving, fishing, and kite boarding are given from almost all the beaches but the lesser expected activities such as elephant trekking, yoga practicing and lazing on a hammock are very much on the list of things you can do while you are here.
While there is a bit of shopping avenues closer to the capital of Thong Sala it reeks of the usual Thai shopping atmosphere; late night bazaars, fast food the Thai way and colourful souvenir shops.
It is generally only in the city that you will find all the amenities, banks, pharmacies and ATMs as most other parts of the island still try to retain the jungle environment or the seclusion that is desired by travelers. Though it can be a tad inconvenient for a typical traveler, those who only want the environment and their travel partners with them will find this an excitingly private affair.
