If you know your “Green Room” from your “Hang Ten” and would rather be in a “Barrel” rather than “In the Soup” then you have a pretty good idea what’s to come! Confused? Well these are amongst the many surfing terms you may come to hear when on your surfing holidays in the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. Just do a quick search for these and other terms and you will be good to go; well almost, because you still may not be sure of the best places to surf. Here are some surfing points worth checking out.
Noosa Corner – Beginners and those looking to surf just for fun will like Noosa Corner’s First Point and its point break waves that break to the right. Wave sizes can vary and you could be looking at everything from 3 foot waves to 12 foot ones on a good day.
Mooloolaba Corner – Here is where you will find what is referred to as “The Spit” which features both rights and lefts for some surfing action for beginners. These beach break type of waves may only average between 3 to 5 feet, but they are fast. You can find this spot at the further end of Mooloolaba Beach and the fact that the cove is sheltered by a rock wall means that there are small breaks perfect for those looking to get the hang of surfing.
Alexandra Headland – With its swells that can range from moderate to high, the break off this popular surfing spot does offer some great thrills on the water. Beach breaks and right-handers are to be found here for surfers planning to hit the waters, though do keep in mind that it can get crowded and it is tantamount that you follow strict surfing etiquette when it comes to waiting your turn. A good way to avoid the crowd would be to try heading out as early as possible (weather and surf permitting) and it certainly helps finding beachside accommodation. Sunshine Coast has plenty of these on offer though book ahead during the surfing season. If you are planning to surf at Alexandra Headland, Oaks Seaforth Resort is a convenient option to consider right by the beach.
Noosa National Park – Of course if you are a seasoned surfer, you may want more of a challenge and Noosa National Park certainly provides a lot of those! Boiling Point with its point break waves that go right is definitely something experienced surfers will like to go up against. Waves can get as big as 12 feet though you do have to be careful of rocks and sharks; yes sharks have been spotted sometimes in these waters so make sure you check ahead and don’t surf alone. It always helps to ask the locals as well.
