Chi Lin Nunnery is a large Buddhist temple complex that was first established in 1934. In 1990, the premises were renovated to resemble the architecture of the Tang dynasty, which lasted between 618 AD and 907 AD. The elegant creation was rebuilt completely of wood, without a single nail. This intricate work uses interlocking sections of wood in the place of nails to depict the harmony between humans and nature. The temple area consists of a cluster of temple halls, bonsai tea plants, bougainvillea creepers and tranquil lotus ponds. A number of treasured Buddhist relics, namely, statues sculpted from gold, clay and wood representing deities such as the Sakyamuni Buddha and bodhisattvas can also be seen at the temple. Silent nuns can be seen moving about carrying offerings of fruit and rice.
The complex must be entered through a series of three gates. The first courtyard, or the lotus pond garden leads onto the Hall of Celestial Kings which holds a large statue of the seated Buddha. Beyond this you will find the main hall, which contains a statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha accompanied by two standing disciples and two seated bodhisattvas.
