A long tailed kite fluttering high above, “swimming” as it were against the breeze, holding steady in place in a race it is destined never to win. As you approach closer, you will notice several other kites joining in the fray eager to get ahead, some soaring higher and higher, while others slowly make their downward journey in disappointment, seemingly sad for losing the freedom of flight. These are some of the first images you will glimpse as you near the famed Galle Face Green, nestled along the coast in Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, Colombo.
This popular public locale sits in between the vast azure playground that is the Indian Ocean glistening in the sun and the rapidly changing city on the move where development is ever present such as the One Galle Face, a Colombo mixed use development project that is rapidly progressing just across from Galle Face Green.
Galle Face Green, which is more of a dusty green than a lush green, is the perfect place to hangout be it for families, couples or even that solitary soul looking to enjoy some contemplation by the sea or even a spot of people watching since the wide gamut of Colombo’s multicultural and multiethnic communities can be found here. With the strong ocean winds constantly buffeting this stretch, it is little wonder that kite flying is such a popular pastime throughout the day. Friends and families can be seen picnicking, children running about in carefree abandon under the watchful gaze of parents and vendors trying their best to tempt visitors with everything from juicy pineapple slices sprinkled with salt and chilli powder to brightly coloured toys and trinkets.
As day turns to night and the city comes alive under a starry sky, so does Galle Face Green. With the sun safely tucked away beneath the horizon, this charming area becomes a hub for hanging out and enjoying some truly delectable treats. Nana’s is a buzz with action as people flock to order a variety of spicy “kotthus”, while another dining favourite are the freshly fried “isso wadey”, a delicious prawn based snack served hot with gravy and a sprinkling of onions. For dessert you can easily find an ice cream truck selling refreshing ice cream cones and popsicles and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach; make your way up to the pier where the sight and sounds of the mighty ocean greet you, sprinkling you with a cooling sea spray and an end to a most wonderful day.
