This reserve houses a variety of over four thousand species and over hundred and fifty giant panders classified as highly endangered. The endangered species include red pandas, white lipped deer, golden monkey and white-eared pheasants. A large amount of these animals live in a natural forest habitat which is between 2,200-3,600 meters of altitude. Furthermore, the Reserve also contains over four thousand plant species, some of them consisting of dove trees, Fragesia denudate and Katsura trees.
During a devastating earthquake in 2008, the Panda Research Center and this region has been greatly destroyed. Two adult pandas were gound missing and another two was found to be injured. Following this, unfortunately only one panda out of the two were found alive. The other one was buried after its dead body was discovered. The climate of this Reserve is quite unique due to its location as it is it half surrounded by a forest setting and by the snowcapped mountains.
