Spanning over 14 hectares The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens was established 1818 and is located in Hobart within the Queens Domain.
The Gardens is home to an amazing selection of plants and trees of historic value that date back to the nineteenth century. The garden also has the most unusual, and the world’s only Sub Antarctic Plant House. The Sub Antarctic plant house displayed plants from the Sub Antarctic islands. The plants are in a climatically-controlled environment, where chilly wet conditions of the island are mirrored to perfection. These plants have been collected on field trips to the Macquarie Island by the Gardens staff and scientists. Prior to the Europeans settlement local Aboriginal tribes used this site. Today traces of their occupation are still apparent.
Adding to its impressive collection of massive trees, the garden is home to a wide variety is trees and plants belonging to a number of species from around the world. The Japanese garden, the Chinese collection, the vegie patch, the herb garden, the lily pond, the cactus house, the rain garden and the fuscia house are among the in famous collections. Formed in 1840 by damming a natural stream that drained the adjacent hill the Lily pond is one of the most recognisable and beloved areas of the Gardens. The Fuchsia House was created in 1958 but was redesigned in 1995 and now displays more than 190 varieties of one of the most exotic ornamentals.
