Its journey towards limelight started during the Eastern Han (25-220). Later, during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907) Emperor Tainzong stumbled upon this enchanting mountain and was known to have praised its scenic beauty. Additions to the picturesque spot came during the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911) where various structures such as temples, pagodas, towers and Xanadus were constructed to complement its naturally beautiful setting. The sight has also inspired various paintings and poems during the Qing Dynasty and it was a favourite holiday destination for the emperors of this era.
When the Chinese dynasties fell, this area was greatly neglected and was restored only in the 1990’s to its original fame. And today it is again a much sought after holiday destination, especially for those who appreciate the natural splendour and historical value of such attractions. The ancient structures set against the jade pine trees, silvery streams of crystal clear water, interesting shaped rocks and the lush greenery all around is an ideal declaration of total fulfilment.
The mountain itself features five impressive peaks and for those interested in exploring historical sites over the years the Mount Panshan Scenic Area was complemented with about 160 structures. There are four main temples here apart from the various pagodas, Xanadus and towers; each telling the story of the glorious past of the Mount Panshan.
