Sri Lanka, set in the heart of the Indian Ocean, is an island nation boasting of nearly 30,000 years of history. The historical evolution of this unique isle has been meticulously catalogued by the Mahavamsa, Culavamsa and the Deepavamsa chronicles over the centuries. The island has witnessed a monarchical system of governance for years until it was destabilized by the colonization by the British. Most notably, the island is of a predominant Buddhist faith introduced as early as the third century BC by the son of King Asoka of India, Mahinda Thera.
The introduction of the Buddhist faith to the country influenced many aspects of governance and affirmed the beliefs of the people which of course lead to the religion being practiced for centuries and its influence even as early as the second century BC can be seen in the construction and maintenance of many temples, stupas and monasteries over the years.
The Mulkirigala Rock Monastery is a testament to the artistic and engineering capabilities of the islands ancestors as they transformed an inaccessible mountain into a rock monastery and the cave alone is a mesmerizing sight to behold for it is complete with paintings based on the previous births of the Buddha. Therefore, the construction of the Monastery is said to have been in the 2nd century BC and is said to be of much historical importance.
Mulkirigala is less than half an hour away from Tangalle and is an attraction that tourists are encouraged to visit if they wish to obtain a unique insight into the history and culture of the country. Once you reach the village, the locals will be able to guide you to steps that will take you to the Monastery. One must then climb steps carved of stone that takes them to the temple and on the way; one will be treated to a view of a number of temples, statutes and stupas. Once they get to the summit, they will be treated to one of the most panoramic views of the Southern coastal belt.
The view from the top alone should entice you to climb this mountain for it is truly spectacular. When opting for accommodation in the South, it is best to reside in a Galle hotel for it is more central and is home to a number of quality hotels such as Jetwing Lighthouse. Built on the edge of the beach, this is one of the few Galle hotels which give you an unrestricted view of the ocean along with quality service and delectable delights which will make your taste buds sing.
