Sultan Park is a public park which is built where the royal palace once stood. The park is located in Male, the capital of Maldives. Sultan Park symbolises the history and once played an integral role in the culture of the Maldives. It was initially home to a vast array of tropical plants. The rolling scenic landscape, featuring cool ponds adorned with lilies and large shady trees, was popular as a leisure park. Visitors of all ages would come in large numbers to relax, listen to the songs of birds and admire the flowers.
Today, the park rarely attracts locals. Only one of the palace buildings remains today and it serves as the National Museum. A complete collection of Royal possessions are on display here, including: thrones, ceremonial parasols, sedan chairs and intricately lacquered boxes. You will also find an interesting assortment of artefacts gathered from around the Maldivian islands. Among the exhibits are statues of monkeys, Buddha heads, Bohomala sculptures and two intriguing figurines that have five faces with feline features. One broken piece of statue has been identified as depicting the Hindu god of water, Makara. Two large Iron gates mark the entrance to the park, standing opposite Islamic Centre on Medhuziyaaraiy Magu.
