Leisure travellers to Thailand usually find Bangkok to be the most convenient location to be based. Muang Boran is a showcase of Thailand: its history, heritage and culture are all on display in one vast open air museum. The attraction was a creation of Khun Lek Viriyaphant, a Thai millionaire whose goal was to preserve the national heritage for the benefit of future generations. It is located thirty kilometres south of Bangkok in the Samut Prakan Province. Anticipate an hour or so for the taxi ride, which would cost around four hundred and fifty Baht. A fee of seven hundred Baht is charged per person to enter the park. It consists of more than one hundred and fifteen buildings and is spread out over two hundred and fifty acres. A tram car runs through the park in the mornings, you can hop on or rent a golf cart for one hundred and fifty Baht. A third option is to look for the bicycles at the entrance, there is no charge to use one.
The museum is divided into sections that display different areas of Thailand’s history and culture. The south side of the park replicates a rural village, with a market place and ancient house designs taken from Yan Nawa, an older district of Bangkok. The central and northern sections take you on a journey where history comes to life. Explore the ancient empires: Lanna, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin. The marvels of Thai architecture through the ages are revealed through replicas of temples, palaces and ancient cities. A floating market is also included to depict daily life and how the waterways served as channels for trade and transport.
