Gregory Lake
Named after Sir William Gregory, Gregory Lake was created in 1873 to harness the tranquil surroundings and healing climate of Nuwara Eliya as a respite from the hot and humid conditions that prevail in the rest of Sri Lanka. It was loved by the colonists, and today it’s one of the most popular attractions, enjoyed by both locals and tourists.
Getting There
Gregory Lake is situated in a scenic location in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, making it relatively easy to reach. You can find tuk-tuks and taxis to take you there. For instance, if you stay at Araliya Red,which is a favoured Nuwara Eliya family hotel, you could get to the lake in five minutes.
History
Gregory Lake was part of a larger project commissioned by Sir William Gregory in the 19th century. The goal was to turn Nuwara Eliya into a recreational, European-style hotspot. It was loved by visitors back then, just as it is today.
Scenic Points
You’ll find several scenic points around the lake offering phenomenal views of the area. Gregory Park is a popular family spot with a lush, manicured garden, ideal for a quiet evening. To be enchanted by the Nuwara Eliya landscape, move close to the banks to see the mist rising off the lake against the rolling hills.
Things to Do
Besides admiring the views, there are several other things you can do to enjoy your visit to Gregory Lake. Take a boat ride across the lake to immerse yourself in the scenery. Cycling is an excellent way to burn off some energy while enjoying the lush countryside. The lake also offers horse riding, and the green-carpeted banks and park are perfect for picnics.
