Sri Lanka is an amazing destination to visit due to its unique culture, history and also because of the colonial remnants still remaining on the land. These remnants all over the country turn out to be excellent places of visit as they tell all visitors a history from the past. Negombo, Colombo and Galle are some of the most visited cities by travellers to take a look back at the colonial times of the country. Club Hotel Dolphin in Negombo is an excellent option for accommodation for a beach hotel, Negombo as it lets you embrace the real essence of local spirit.
On that note, Dutch fort in Negombo is undeniably a distinct tourist attraction that gives way to many beautiful photo capture moments. This structure belongs to the colonial days of the country and it provides you with a glimpse of the Sri Lankan nation when it was ruled by the Portuguese and Dutch. This structure tells the visitors that the city of Negombo had been encircled by an earth wall from which only a part is till remaining.
The Dutch Fort is located on a narrow strip of land between a lagoon and an inlet of the sea. It is built exactly on the same place that the Portuguese had their Fort. The remaining Dutch Fort was built on the ruins of the Portuguese Fort ruins in a pentagonal pattern. The fort had been surrounded by moats and the gate had been accessed by a drawbridge. However, eventually, the landmass on which the Old Dutch Fort Gate was constructed was regularly washed by the sea.
Facing it on the landside was a town with the familiar rectangular pattern of streets which was itself protected by earth walls. The area to the west was regularly flooded by the sea, changing the land on which the fort stood into a peninsula. Thus, over the years it had been washed away and the strongest part of this structure remains still as a memorable monument for Sri Lankans. Make a visit to this setting and time travel to the colonial days of Sri Lanka!
